Frequently Asked Questions
No, you will be working on a self-employed basis and must have the right to work in the UK. Tutors are responsible for paying their own income tax and must be registered as self-employed with HMRC.
Yes, you do need to be a qualified teacher. This is one of the unique features that Teach Wessex offers. You will be asked to provide copies of your teaching qualifications during the interview process.
Tutors must hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate and be registered on the DBS Update Service.
Tutors must ensure that they have the correct equipment to provide online lessons. This includes a PC/laptop, a fast internet connection, webcam, a microphone, and bright lighting. Please ensure that tuition sessions are conducted in a quiet environment/atmosphere with minimal to no distractions.
We require a minimum of 2 hours a week tutoring from each tutor. As this is a flexible role, you will set your availability and we will try and find students to fill these times. However, we cannot guarantee that we’ll be able to find you any students.
We will contact you to discuss potential students and agree with you when a trial/weekly session can be arranged. It is your responsibility to ensure you have a record of when your sessions are booked.
All communication with the parents outside of the sessions is done by Teach Wessex. This is to safeguard the tutors, students, and parents. You will not have any contact details of the student/parent i.e. phone/email and vice versa.
Students are booked in for regular weekly/bi-weekly term-time sessions. However, sessions may be scheduled during school holidays upon parent request and depending on the tutor’s availability. We close for 2 weeks over Christmas, 1 week over February half term, 1 week over Easter and 2-3 weeks over the summer holidays.
You will be expected to be available for term times. However, we understand that you also need time away and if you are booking a holiday, we request at least 4 weeks’ notice, more if possible. This enables us to inform the parents/students and reschedule sessions where necessary.
Tutors must invoice either weekly or monthly. Payment will then be made to the tutor by bank transfer.
If a student cancels within 48 hours of the start of the session, full payment will be taken.
If you are unwell and unable to carry out the session, at least 24 hours’ notice of cancellation must be given, so that the Client can be informed, and an alternative date agreed, where possible.
Here’s what some of our tutors say……
“I would 100% recommend working for them……Teach Wessex has allowed me to re-discover my passion for teaching by taking me back to the real reason I chose this career – working with the students.
I feel so supported by Katie at Teach Wessex who is always available during my lesson times and beyond to deal with tech issues, making sure the students have the books they need, dealing with all the administration of timetables, and speaking to parents. This means that I spend my time actually teaching and watching the students learn and progress while Teach Wessex does the rest.”
Sasha, English GCSE and 11 Plus Tutor
“I have worked for Teach Wessex for three years and found, thanks to Katie and Phil that I thoroughly enjoy it. They are very adept at working out students’ needs and learning styles which means I am armed with what I need, in order to do my job to the best of my ability.
The flexibility of working online means that I can teach 1:1 at times that suit, all on the back of a full time teaching role. There is not much better than simply being able to get on and teach knowing that you have the full support of good management and well placed students.”
Charlie, English GCSE Tutor
